An evening of firsts to open our season
I hope everyone is settling in to September without too much wear and tear. Kids starting school and all the “firsts” that go along with that, activities are gearing up again, adult classes and programs, and all the outdoor work that goes along with fall – it’s enough to challenge even the most efficient planners.
Horizon Stage also had its own “first” recently, with the September 14 performance of a new Canadian Country Music Association award winner. Aaron Goodvin won a songwriting award just before he appeared at the Stage (his first CCMA award) AND, our show was the first time he had a headline show sell out. It was the first show of our new season, so it was a night of firsts all around. And what a great way to start the new season. He unfortunately had a bit of a cold so his voice didn’t have quite as much power as usual, but he was funny and charming and the band kicked butt! His stories were good, even if he messed up the joke – I think having so many of his family in the audience made him a little nervous (how cute is that).
We’re looking ahead now to other fall shows. We’ve already told you that Lisa Brokop’s September 28 show is sold out, but there are still tickets available for her October 1 show, but less than 100, so don’t wait too long to get yours. Fred Penner on September 30 has 4 tickets, and that takes us into October. New North Collective (October 12) and The Comic Strippers (October 26) both still have seats available online or at 780-962-8995.
It’s always nice to get a new season underway and get back into the groove. I love seeing all the returning patrons and hearing how summer was, and what their plans are for the coming year. A reunion of sorts, though it takes a few shows before I feel like I’ve seen most of you again. I even had a quick chat with a former student I haven’t seen in many years, who said she had tried to say hello to me at previous shows but that “I move too fast” in the lobby. I laughed and said that was probably true.
Now that the ice has been broken on the new season, I hope you’ll take a moment to look ahead at the artists coming up, and be sure to say hello in the lobby. If you can catch me, that is! See you soon everyone.
