On the Horizon - April 27

Nearing the end of another successful season

Hello. My apologies – it has been a while since I last shared some On the Horizon thoughts with you. It has been a bit of a roller coaster lately. One season winding down, another one gearing up, and to be honest, it didn’t feel quite right writing about our shows when the community was grappling with the tragedy of the Humboldt bus crash.

First I offer our deepest sympathies and heartfelt thoughts to those personally affected by the crash. We may not be a sports facility, but we are part of this community and we share your shock and grief. Our sadness has only been overshadowed by witnessing the incredible coming-together of this country to put its arms around the families who need it most. It has been inspiring to see the level of compassion shown to friends and strangers alike. It has made us proud to be Canadians.

I do want to tell you about some great things coming your way at Horizon Stage, and talk about the new season. We are, as I mentioned before, winding down the 2017-18 programming. In fact, we only have one show of our own left, then the Horizon Players, and the rest of the events through to the end of June are rentals. Tonight (if you are reading this on Friday) is our LAST show – I find it hard to believe we’re at this point already. If you haven’t got tickets for Brickhouse yet, there are still some available at the door. This is simply a feel-good music night, the kind that makes you glad you’re a music lover. This Vancouver band specializes in toe-tapping, head bobbing, sing-out-loud tunes. I can’t think of a better way to end a week, and a season. The lobby opens at 6:30, so come on down and join us – the show is at 7:30 and tickets are just $35 for adults and $30 for seniors and students. You deserve a great night out!

The Horizon Players bring you a comedy about family vacations on May 3, 4, 5 – just in time to get thinking about your own summer vacations. I mean, spring has finally arrived, right? Please say yes… please say yes… PLEEEEEASE say yes. Some of you will remember I wrote about this show at the end of March (right?) so you already know how great our volunteer community theatre group is, and how dedicated they are, and how much they would LOVE to perform for you. They do an incredible amount of work, spending hours learning lines, building and painting sets, sewing and putting together costumes, directing, and all the other tasks that go into creating a piece of theatre. Please show them your support – come see the show. Tickets are available online or by phone at 780-962-8995.

Quickly before I sign off, Canada DayExternal is coming! July 1 (I know it’s a shock, but it seems to happen every year at about the same time) in Jubilee Park – from morning to night, we’ll be there to entertain you, laugh at you while you try to beat your kid at an activity you’ll regret tomorrow… and of course to share the fireworks. It’s a great day, and Horizon Stage and the Stagelighters are thrilled to present the acts on the Community Stage from 9-6:30 and the Main Stage from 7-11. Come celebrate with us.

Lastly, the Horizon Stage 2018-19 season goes on sale on July 5 – because we’re not tired enough after Canada Day – we just need to keep the party going. We’re looking forward to showing you what we’ve been working on, and helping you plan your entertainment year. See you soon!
