Brandi Wurtz, Theatre Manager, Horizon Stage
Hi there, welcome back! From holidays, from visiting, from days off work, from eating like there’s no tomorrow… and from the bitter cold! Wasn’t that ridiculous?
Horizon Stage has been preparing for the New Year with a fresh coat of wax on the floor, getting all spiffed up and ready for a cornucopia of shows, both ours and renters. There’s a lot on offer in January, while you’re trying to beat the winter blues. You can check out our website of course for the full details, horizonstage.com, but in the meantime here’s some of what’s happening soon:
The Horizon Players are holding auditions for their spring show, Leaving Iowa, on January 8 and 9 at the theatre. Visit their website horizonplayers.org for the details on securing yourself an audition time, or to offer your services in a non-acting capacity. They are looking for an Assistant Director, Assistant Stage Manager, Set Designer and dresser, and they would love to work with you. Don’s Country Classic Show on January 12 is being presented by one of our new renters, and tickets are selling like very well. Ward’s Winter Wonderland on January 21 will bring a whole bunch of cute to the theatre, and all the info is available by contacting Ward School of Dance (we’re not selling tickets for that one – contact them directly please).
As for our own Horizon Stage presentations, how’s this for variety? We start with Quartetto Gelato on January 14 – a fusion in its own right. 4 instrumentalists, with more changes in mood than Mother Nature these days. January 20, get set to sing along with the Sound of Music, on the big screen. We have received the fun packs that each audience member will get that afternoon, and I have to tell you I’m thoroughly intrigued by what’s in them. Of course there’s some edelweiss and flibbertigibbets, but what the heck is the card with the ghost for? I don’t know… I’ll have to find out when you do – while I’m singing along! Costumes are not mandatory, but encouraged. For anyone who attended our Sing-a-longa Grease a couple years ago, you’ll remember that there were more people on stage for our costume parade than there were left in the audience. What a riot!
Tim Tamashiro’s When You’re Smiling is a beautiful tribute to the Rat Pack – Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. Recreating the Las Vegas scene in the 1960s, Tim promises the show will… well, leave you Smiling! That’s on January 27. For the really wee ones in your life, the Purple Pirate’s Magic Pirate Ship sails into Spruce Grove on January 29 at 10 a.m. There’s only a few tickets left for this one, so don’t wait, or you’ll have to walk the plank. Ok, maybe just back out to your car empty-handed, but it will feel like the plank!
The other show happening at Horizon Stage this month is only available for school bookings, but I thought I’d share the information with you so you know what else is happening behind the scenes. We’ve arranged for a group called Red Sky Performance based in Toronto to do two shows specifically for kids in our area to learn about reconciliation, friendship, and cultural differences, through drama and movement. The performances are vibrant and energetic, and we’d like to thank Canadian Heritage for their assistance in bringing this company to our theatre to help educate our students. We couldn’t do it without their help.
January is a busy month, and February will be here before we know it. In a couple of weeks I’ll give you a preview of the 4 shows we’re presenting then. In the meantime, our website is always open at horizonstage.com, and the City Hall Ticket Centre is open Monday to Friday, 9-4:30, and we’d love to see your smiling, energetic face. Come visit us! Happy New Year to everyone.
