What is Artstrek?
Artstrek is a week-long residential summer theatre program for teens held at Red Deer College.It focuses on exploring the components of theatre and production. Artstrek students learn about acting, voice, movement, directing, sound, music, lighting, design, and more.
Artstrek program dates & age categories
Exploration I (July 9-14)
For enthusiastic theatre lovers who are 12 to 14 years old.
Exploration II (July 16-21)
For 15 and 16 year olds with a keen interest in theatre and a dedication to increasing their knowledge and skill level.
Exploration III (July 23-29)
For 17 and 18 year olds who have demonstrated a commitment to theatre practice and education.
Who can apply for a Horizon Stage Artstrek Scholarship?
If you have completed grade seven or higher at a school in Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, or Parkland County, you may apply for a scholarship to cover your FULL Artstrek program fee.Students who are homeschooled and live in any of the three communities may also apply. These scholarships are funded by the Horizon Stagelighters Society and the Theatre Advisory Board.
How to apply for a Horizon Stage Artstrek Scholarship
Register for Artstrek online (Opens at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 3)
On page iv (6. Fee Payment) of the application form, select ‘YES’ to indicate you are receiving sponsorship funding from an organization in your community*. Fill in Horizon Stage’s name and address and the sponsorship amount of $625 if you are applying for Exploration I or II OR $675 if you are applying for Exploration III.
*You will have to pay your own $40 administration fee.
Submit a scholarship application letter to Horizon Stage that includes
- details about your experiences in theatre studies and/or theatre production
- your plans for future involvement in theatre
- how attending Artstrek will help you accomplish your goals,
- your full address and contact information.
Factors such as academic excellence and financial need will also be taken into account. Letters of reference are a part of the Artstrek application process, but they do not need to be sent to Horizon Stage.

If your scholarship application is not successful you will be responsible for paying your Artstrek registration fees to Theatre Alberta.
2017 Artstrek Play of Study: Vimy
In celebration of Canada's 150th Anniversary and the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, this year’s play of study will be VIMY by award-winning Alberta playwright Vern Thiessen. This story about cooperation and national spirit takes students to a French field hospital and introduces them to soldiers from across Canada and a Nova Scotian nurse who cares for them.
